Hey! What's going on?

Vineyard.NET is slowly transitioning towards a more standards compliant website that separates the look and feel of the site from the content.

This is done using a technology called Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Unfortunately, support for CSS in older browsers (specifically, anything prior to a version 5.0) ranges from poor and incomplete to simply wrong and painful for both viewers and designers. Ultimately, there is no way to reliably design a CSS-based layout for older web browsers. Vineyard.NET will continue to ensure the overall functionality of its website for older browsers but the overall experience will be a little more spartan than before.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and invite you to consider upgrading your web browser. For what it's worth, we like Mozilla but just about any modern browser, including Internet Explorer, should suffice.

MacOS 7.5

Establishing a connection to vineyard.net does involve a bit of complicated poking around in your computer, but once your are done you shouldn't have to make any changes ever gain.

First you need to establish the TCP/IP networking protocols on your Mac. The program that does this for you is called MacTCP and is distributed by Apple. We cannot give you a copy of this program, but it is included with all Macintosh System packages beyond System 7.5. MacTCP is also commonly available with several "How to Attach your Mac to the Internet" books.

Here is some additional information that you will need to know about vineyard.net:

Phone number (508) 696-6650
Baud rate 9600-38400
Nameserver 204.17.195.100
Gateway address 204.17.195.230
Default domain vineyard.net
Now, let's get started!

Setting up your Mac

  1. Insert the Mac PPP disk into your drive.
  2. Drag the file Config PPP into the Control Panels folder inside your system folder.
  3. Drag the file PPP into the Extensions folder inside your system folder.
  4. Open the control panel called MacTCP. You will see a window that looks like this:

  5. Select the PPP icon on the MacTCP screen.
  6. Click the More button. You will see this window:

  7. Under the "Obtain Address" heading, select the box that says "Server."
  8. Type the address 204.17.195.230 as your Gateway Address.
  9. Set your default domain to be vineyard.net.
  10. Type the address 204.17.195.100 as your namserver.
  11. Close the MacTCP panel. You will be told:

  12. Reboot your mac!

The second installation phase involves the aspect of TCP/IP which allows the protocol to communicate over a modem. This protocol is called PPP and is provided on a Mac by the Control Panel called "Config PPP"

  13. Open the control panel Config PPP. You will see this window:

  14. Set the Port Name to the port that you are using. You will probably want to use Modem Port unless you have a PowerBook (like I do), in which case you might want to use the Internal Modem
  15. Set the Idle Timeout to 5. This causes your computer to hang up the Internet connection if you are not using the Internet for more than 5 minutes.
  16. Click the button labeled Config You will see this window:

  17. Set the PPP Server Name to a pleasant mnemonic like: vineyard.net
  18. If you have a modern (less than 3 years old) modem you will want to set the Port Speed substantially faster than the maximum speed supported by your modem.

    Modem Speed Port Speed
    1200 Bd 1200 (Get a new modem)
    2400 Bd 2400 (Get a new modem)
    9600 Bd 9600 (Good enough for e-mail)
    14.4 kBd (v.32) 56 KBd
28.8 kBd (v.34) 230 kBd (non-Power Mac people have to suffice with 56 kBd)

  19. Set the Flow Control to CTS & RTS (DTR)
  20. Select Tone Dial if you have Touch-Tone.
  21. Type the number 696-6650 as the phone number.
  22. Type AT&F as your Modem Init string. (This initialization string will restore your modem to its factory configuration before you place each call.)
  23. Type 30 as your Modem connection timeout.
  24. Click the button that says Authentication... You will see this window:

  25. Type your username as your Auth. ID. My username is "simsong."
  26. Type your password as your Password.

Alternatively, you may leave these two fields blank, in which case you will be prompted to type them each time you log in.

  27. Type 10 as your number of retries, and 3 as your timeout.
  28. Click Done on the Authentication panel.
  29. Click Done on the Setup panel.

    Now, let's try it out!

  30. Click the button that says Open.
  31. You should hear your Macintosh dialing the phone. One the screen, you should see a series of windows.

    First you will see this:

    Then you should see this:

  32. If you did not type your username and password into the Authentication panel, you will be prompted to do so at this point:

  33. You are now connected. You can use Netscape to cruise the Internet. In order to send and receive email, however, you will need to configure Eudora.

Problems?

If you are having problems, you are welcome to give us a call, and we'll try to talk you through the setup. However, before you call, you might want to check out your hardware to make sure that your modem and your cable are functioning properly.
  1. Go into a terminal program such as ZTerm, CrossTalk, Kermit (or something similar) and call up our modem. Do this by typing what appears in Bold below: ATTD696-6650
    CONNECT 14400

    Welcome to vineyard.net.

    User Access Verification

    Username: simsong
    Password:type your password here
    router>

What this procedure does is verify that your modem works, that your cable works, and that your username and password work. Instead of typing "simsong," type your account name and password.

  2. If you don't see the "Welcome to vineyard.net" prompt, then there is something wrong with your cable or modem.
  3. If you do see the "Welcome" prompt, but you don't see the "router>" prompt, then you do not have the correct username and password.
