Hey! What's going on?

Vineyard.NET is slowly transitioning towards a more standards compliant website that separates the look and feel of the site from the content.

This is done using a technology called Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Unfortunately, support for CSS in older browsers (specifically, anything prior to a version 5.0) ranges from poor and incomplete to simply wrong and painful for both viewers and designers. Ultimately, there is no way to reliably design a CSS-based layout for older web browsers. Vineyard.NET will continue to ensure the overall functionality of its website for older browsers but the overall experience will be a little more spartan than before.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and invite you to consider upgrading your web browser. For what it's worth, we like Mozilla but just about any modern browser, including Internet Explorer, should suffice.

Caveat: Consider whether you really need another mailbox

Setting up and using additional mailboxes not only costs an extra $5.00 per month for each new mailbox you create, but requires an understanding of how POP works, and how to teach your email client new tricks.

For many users, simple email aliases and filtering techniques employed by most email clients will meet all of your needs at no extra cost.

If you have any questions about email aliases, you can consult our FAQ on the subject.

What is a new mailbox? or What is a POP account?

When you connect to Vineyard.NET with a telephone and a modem, you are most often using the Point-to-Point Protocol, or PPP.

Once you've established a connection, email is sent and received using the Post Office Protocol, or POP. When you first signed up with Vineyard.NET we created a POP account with your username, yourname@vineyard.net

Vineyard.NET allows you to have multiple mailboxes attached to the same dial-up account.

A new mailbox is really a new POP account that resides within the scope of your overall Vineyard.NET account. It allows you to create and use distinct email addresses and have the mail for that address stored sperately from other email addresses.

For consistency's sake, we have used the term POP account throughtout this document.

This can help to avoid confusion for people who have been sharing a single account, or for people who have been using the same email addresses for both business and personal needs.

It affords individuals greater privacy for their email, as each POP account is protected with it's own password.

A new POP account is not a mail-alias

This is not the same thing as a mail-alias. On the surface they may appear similar, but each acts very differently from the other.

  • A mail-alias simply re-directs different email addresses to the same mailbox, the one that all was setup under yourname@vineyard.net when you first signed up with Vineyard.NET.

  • A new POP account allows you to create and use a different email addresses and have them sent to seperate and distinct locations --or "mailboxes"-- on the Vineyard.NET server without having to create a whole new Vineyard.NET account.
  • A new mailbox is a new POP account, not a new dial-up account.

Please remember the distinction between an email account and a more general dial-up account.

To access any new POP account you have created, you will have to dial-in to the Vineyard.NET server using the name and password that you chose when you set up your account. They are the only name&password pair that will validate for all the various internet protocols we support.

The name&password combinations you create for new mailboxes will only work using the mail protocol: POP.

You must already be online before you can access any new mailboxes you create.

    Setting up your mail client

If your email client is not already set up to send and receive messages, you should contact your reseller or consult the Basic Email & News Configurations table before proceeding any further.

To use an additional POP account, you need to change to email address and user identification settings in your mail client.

The ease with which you can do this depends almost entirely on which email client you are using.

At the moment, the easiest applications to configure are Microsoft's Outlook Express, Qualcomm's Eudora Pro, and Netscape's Communicator package.

All three applications support the notion of different user accounts, each with specific user information. Each application implements these features in their own unique fashion.

  • Microsoft Outlook Express 4.0

Microsoft has allowed for multiple 'Accounts' in the most recent version of Outlook Express. To begin setting up, select the Accounts option under the Tools menu.

  • Qualcomm Eudora Pro 3.1 or higher
click here to see a screen shot

Eudora also has multiple accounts, but chose to call them 'Personalities'. Personalities are only availible in commercial versions of Eudora 3.1 and higher, and are accessed by selecting the Settings option from the Special menu item.

  • Netscape Navigator 4.0 or higher
click here to see a screen shot

Netscape maintains profiles of different users and their preferences with a seperate application called the 'User Profile Manager'. Once the 'User Profile Manager' has been configured, Communicator will prompt you to choose a profile everytime you launch your web browser.

Each profile needs to have it's mail settings configured by selecting the Mail and Groups option under the Preferences menu item.

Communicator does not allow you to switch profiles while the application is still running, which means you have to quit and restart to check different mailboxes.

  • NOTE

The passwords for any additional POP accounts you may have created will be different from the password you use to connect to Vineyard.NET.

When your mail client prompts you for a password, make sure you are providing the correct password for the POP account you are accessing.

If you do not have one of the email clients mentioned above, it wouldn't be impossible to administer multiple POP accounts, but you will need to have even more patience and understanding of how your operating system works. For some time now, Macintosh users have been keeping multiple preferences files for Netscape and Eudora, and this approach would likely work for multiple POP accounts.

If the preceding paragraph makes you scratch your head and wonder, we would again strongly recommend that you use email aliases instead.

Can I check my additional POP accounts using WebMail?

Currently, no. Any additional POP accounts you set up can not be checked or read using WebMail.

WebMail will only allow you to read mail sent to the username under which your Vineyard.NET account was first created. We are working to configure WebMail so that any POP account on Vineyard.NET can be accessed from our web-based interface.
